Duh Christine!?!? The reason that it's XiBei, instead of BeiXi is that we chinee folk read backwards... don't you know?? It's all quite simple.

ha ha... j/k

You are so right about that Ernie dude...he is hilarious! You know, sometimes the voices in my head tell me I should start one of these online journals too, but then I think... who'd want to read the diary of a housewife? I mean, I actually read your To Do list (no, I don't have much of a life).
But, Diary of a *Lonely* Housewife... now that could get interesting. Hmmmm.

In regard to the question of why "Northwest" is called XI-BEI? Shouldn't it be BEI-XI?

Let me explain that the directions in Chinese are backwards from English. Hence, "Southwest" in English becomes XI-NAN in Chinese.

This is also clearly seen in Taiwanese place names. Examples are numerous.

"Nankang" (which means south-harbor) is in the north part of the island.

"Beikang" (which means north-harbor) is in the south part of the island.

"Tungshr" (which means eastern-force) is on the west side of the island.

"Hsilin" (which means western forest) is on the east side of the island.

It order for all this to make sense, it helps if you stand on your head.

I hope that the above analysis clears up any doubts that may be lingering in your mind.

Sincerely,

Richard W. Hartzell

Christine-
Trilisate is a fancy aspirin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, that is used for arthritis.
Baclofen is a muscle relaxant.
I don't believe Gasgel is sold in the states... but I would bet that it's simethicone- yes, a gas reliever, my flatulent friend!
So... what did you eat before going to see the doctor? Maybe it's time to lay off the milk products! j/k

hey chris,

120 secs- impressive. did the doc even examine your wrist?

with what little knowledge i've accumulated so far, here's my take on your new 'drug regimen':

trilisate is the trade name for choline magnesium trisalicylate. think of this as another aspirin for pain relief.

baclofen (tradename: lioresal) is a muscle relaxant. basically, it's suppose to reduce both pain and spasms, and be less sedating. [watch for tolerance though].

as for the gasgel, couldn't find any references in any of my sources.....so i have no idea what that is- probably something that the fda hasn't approved. [hopefully- for your roomates and co-workers, it doens't promote what it sounds like! jk ]

and i'll add my 2 cents on taking pills- esp in taiwan where you can just go down to the pharmacy and ask for a couple of pills. resist the urge! most illnesses are probably viral in origin and thus antibiotics are useless. if you are positive that you have a bacterial infection (coughing up thick, dark colored sputum ,etc), the antibiotics will be effective, but you have to make sure that you take an entire dose- meaning not just til you feel better.

if you don't finish the entire course or pop antibiotics haphazardly, you'll be contributing to the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. and eventually, our mainstream antibiotics will be rendered useless. when you really sick, this would not be a good thing to have!

in fact, the most recent update here in the states, is that they are recommending against antiobiotic therapy for minor bacterial infections since the human immune system will be able to take care of the infection [of course, assuming the patient isn't immuno-compromised].

some groups even go as so far to say stop using anti-bacterial soaps, etc.....but in actuality all soaps are antibacterial- 80-90% of bacteria are removed just from the mechanical action alone.

Hey Christine,
I think I can answer two questions with one answer: Maybe the examination lasted only 120 seconds AND you were prescribed gasgels for the SAME REASON!
Seriously though, I still think you should try the Motrin(ibuprofen) and vitamin B6 for a two week course as I mentioned earlier... and I think I took longer than 120 seconds to respond (thanks to my poor typing skills)!
take care,
gabe

calbear and DrChiu,,. you were the two people I EXPECTED comments from, LOL! From the bottom of my heart I thank you both. Very sweet.

I actually waited to take the medicine (sacrificed myself) until I heard from you guys... so I guess now I should take everything AND the Motrin and Vitamin B6 but NOT the GASGEL??

Isn't that a little overkill with the medicine? Help help... I hate taking any kind of medicine...

Christine,
This is what you get when you go see a doctor and fake being sicker than you really are: 1) The wrong meds.
2) The wrong diagnosis- we usually see through the poor acting and denounce you as crackpots who need a psychologist to figure out what went wrong in your childhood.
3) No relief.
Please do not take both the Trilisate and Motrin. They are both non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that may give you an upset stomach or even bleeding ulcers if you take too many of them habitually. You know which one I like better.
I don't think the Baclofen will help carpal tunnel or even tendonitis. You probably seemed a little tense to the doctor and he thought your self-induced tension might be causing you joint pain. I guess it could, after all, but doubtful in the specific pattern that you told me (I would expect more generalized stuff too, like headaches, neck pain, etc.).
Let me know if I can help you further!
gabe

You can buy me a drink at next New Year's! Which is my preferred tension reliever
And the down payment for your first plastic surgery is to call me "gabe". If you're not my patient, why call me doctor? And how do I change my username!?!?!

The gasgel is prescribed along with the other medication so that you don't have an upset stomach. Standard practice in Taiwan...

Why do you care what it is called in English? All you need to know is that Gasgel is a types of antacid pill used to neutralize the acid in your stomach. Sometimes medication, especially antibiotics, can cause upset stomach and thus gasgel or other similar types of antacid is prescribed.

Hey since everyone here is trying to play doctor, why not me too?

Hey thanks Jay! LOL! Well the only ones who are trying to play doctors in the postings above actually ARE doctors!

You're the only attorney who is pretending to be what you're not. How typical! I KISS YOU!

Boy, do I feel stupid! I formally apologize (not regret, sorry or very sorry) to those doctors who were insulted by my behavior. And Christine, I kiss you too...hey, does that mean we are having a fling?

kiss = fling?

Wow. SEE the power of the internet in action...

Y'know, if kissing really does = fling, then would it be true that many of us have flung like crazy over the past few years?

Hi, Christine:

A few notes on numbers.
Taiwan's got 22 million people, not 20.
And China's population is 1.27 billion, not 1.6 billion. Also, the NT$ wasn't at 26 just before the Asian financial meltdown. It was up in the high 27s. Although the recent trend certainly isn't encouraging, the exchange rate now isn't really all that different than it's been over the past few years. It was well into the 33s a couple years ago.

Of course, none of that changes the fact that the currency isn't doing as well as those of us here would like, and that China's got a hell of a lot more people than Taiwan.

I don't share your faith about China. But we all do what we gotta do.

Happy trails.

Hi Mark! Thanks for giving me the correct numbers! It seems that other people are sending me emails giving me the same (and different) stats... I better be careful with what I say! On the otherhand, it's great to get the correct info from others!

Am posting from La La Land (Las Vegas)... see you folks soon!

Please don't say no one uses a PDA here in the states. My life and livelihood is now dependent upon people (physicians) using a PDA. I use a PDA, but just didn't have it with me when I saw you.

Hi. Just wanted to give you a FYI. Was (am?) a photography geek when I was (still am?) wee little.

Sometimes a reddish/warm hue is pronounced in pictures when incandescent bulbs are the main source of light, especially in low light/poor exposure conditions. Conversely, a bluish/cool hue is exagerrated by fluorescent light in similar conditions.

Okee-doke? Yeah, I know... why do I know such useless information

Hey, Christine.

1. Don't start getting me confused about my sexual orientation at this late stage in my life. If you are a guy, then, er...., uhm.... I'm in deep kimche.

2. Your entry today -- sounds a lot like some of the people in Rants & Raves on ORIENTED, eh wot?

3. Hang in there, lady. As Confucious said, "Don't let the ztRRAW get you down."

4. 23 days and counting. : )
