Dinner with Ken Allen...

It's always great to catch up with Ken. Indeed he is here to give a speech on Friday about the modernization of the PLA and is also meeting with a number of HIGH-LEVEL officials throughout the week. Sorry, had to turn on the CAPS LOCK key for that one. We worked together in a very small office in D.C. for two years, my first job out of college, so we'll always have this connection and PLENTY to talk about. We had a lot of fun working there. I kind of miss those days.

Ken used to run the annual conference as well as the Defense Committee at the Council, which is why I have these obscure names in my head of major defense companies like Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Hughes Aircraft, AlliedSignal, and the Flying Tigers, aka Anna Chennault. We talked a lot about Cross-Strait Relations and how his work relates to that. I almost told him that I also own the URL Cross-Strait-Relations.com which Gus and I were thinking about using for a matching-making site later on down the road, but I didn't think he would appreciate the comment and thus refrained.

Today in sum...

I was so busy doing little things that I shouldn't have been doing that it annoyed me. First, I've been going a little happy with this Internet telephony thingy that Linda K. was telling me about. Okay so I'm a little slow, but at least now I know what it is. I called my mom, my brother, Lisa, and Carol, and left messages with Jun and Kirk J. of all people. I haven't really talked to Kirk in AGES but he recently and accidentally got an email virus which then got sent to me, so we've been emailing as of late.

Speaking of which, I also received 3 emails with attachments from Wayne this morning, and as soon as I saw the subject heading of one ("Gore prepares to something or the other"), I immediately knew it was a system virus. Wayne does NOT have the time to forward news articles and I don't care WHAT they may be about. Scary how well I know some people.

In other news...

I discovered a really nice looking website called Independent. I'm not even sure if it's suppose to be a serious news publication or what, but the design is so nice that I stuck around for awhile to check it out. Now THAT is what a call a well-designed site. What's the difference between one online newspaper from another covering the exact same events? As noted in my ORIENTED business plan... it's all in the packaging. It's all about the design.

I do love the Industry Standard...

Two other articles worth mentioning, both from the Industry Standard. The first is an article about the difference between East Coast and West Coast people which I thought was absolutely hysterical. "East Coast transplants to Silicon Valley find that clothing is only the beginning of the differences in style and culture." It failed to mention though, the difference in how they communicate. If people from the East Coast don't like you, they'll say to your face, "Eat shit!" If people from the West Coast don't like you, they'll say, "Oh HI! How ARE you?!" and then stab you in the back when you're not looking. I'll bet their ancestors were Chinese.

The last article is one that I found awfully inspiring, written by a former lawyer named Leslie A. Gordon who is now a freelance writer based in San Francisco. I can totally relate to her entire experience and in fact, will probably write her a short note if I have time later on today.
